A welcome opportunity

February 2, 2013
Cape Coral Daily Breeze

U.S. Rep. Trey Radel, R-19th District, kicked off a round of public meet-greet-and-discuss sessions Tuesday with an open house at his Cape Coral Office on Nicholas Parkway.

He followed that up Tuesday night with the first of five "listening sessions" he hopes will generate "conversation, debate, (and) discussion."

We applaud the freshman congressman for his initiative.

For too long, face time with our district's representative has been scant at best and nearly non-existent for the average constituent.

Congressman Radel's approach is a welcome change, and we urge area residents to take advantage of the opportunity to share their views.

While most attending the Cape open house seemed pleased with the open door, some have criticized that Congressman Radel may not be as informed as he should be.

But we'll not take any jabs as it is to be expected that he will need time to become acclimated to his new role. The learning curve at the federal level is steep, indeed, but the greatest obstacle is not lack of knowledge at the starting gate. It's forgetting where you came from and who put you there as you meet the lobbyists and well-monied VIPs who love, yes, love, to help fill in all the informational gaps while also stuffing the cracks with crisp dollar bills.

Congressman Radel starting his process on the homefront lends hope that he is aware of this.

We urge the public to take him up on his offer.

The next "listening session" will be here in Cape Coral. It's set to begin at 6 p.m. Feb. Palmetto Pines, 1940 S.W. Ninth Court.

Come equipped with questions and suggestions. This kind of opportunity should always be embraced.
