Tritons earn season split with Seahawks with win

January 8, 2013
By JIM LINETTE (jlinette@breezenewspapers.com) , Cape Coral Daily Breeze

Unlike the first meeting of the season, this time Mariner made the key plays down the stretch to beat crosstown rival Cape Coral 40-35 Thursday night at The Nest.

Rodney Hunter, the only player to reach double figures for either team, led the Tritons with 18 points. Joe Mesaros and David Flynn topped Cape with nine points apiece.

"It was two evenly matched teams, but we were able to make the last run of the game," said Tritons coach James Harris. "We learned a lot in the last month about how to play when behind and make the late run."

The Seahawks (8-9) led just 15-13 at halftime before the Tritons (9-7) grabbed the lead in the second half.

"With the score 15-13 at the half indicates it wasn't a pretty game," said Harris. "The last time we gave up some easy baskets, but we made them earn them tonight."

The Tritons took a 27-25 lead into the final period and enjoyed their biggest lead at 40-33 before the final minute of play.

"Mariner made the final push and we didn't," said Seahawks coach Tom Kenna. "It came down to the last team to make a run would win it."

The Seahawks play at Lehigh Thursday night while the Tritons travel to Lemon Bay on Friday.
