December 30, 2012
By PETE SISK - Special to the Breeze , Cape Coral Daily Breeze

The Cape Coral Seahawks were up to the challenge and took home the trophy.

Leesburg High School controlled the third quarter of Saturday's Opal Division championship game of the Queen of Palms Tournament. The Yellow Jackets had erased Cape's 24-20 halftime lead and were up 35-34 as the fourth quarter began.

No problem. Senior point guard Camary Williams sparked a Seahawks surge as Cape Coral posted a 50-42 win for the tournament title and a 14-0 record.

"It was fun," Seahawks coach Kirk Myers said. "It was fun. Two teams battling, It was great.

"We have a never-say-die attitude. We feel like our motto is to take another team's best punch and come on back with our next punch."

Cape outscored Leesburg 15-6 in the fourth quarter.

Williams' basket and free throw with 6:38 to play put the Seahawks ahead for good. She added another two points seconds later for a 40-36 Cape Coral lead.

Tournament Most Valuable Player McKenna Beach had her own three-point play with a basket and made free throw with 5:28 to play, and Crystal Townsend did the same with 4:44 to go. From there, defense and foul shooting finished off the Yellow Jackets.

"They got the momentum change, but we just held our composure," Beach said. "After they made a run, and made a run again, we held our composure and finished it out."

Leesburg got no closer than 46-42 down the stretch.

Williams, named to the all-tournament team, led Cape scoring with 17 points.. Beach had 14 points and eight rebounds and Townsend wound up with nine points and seven rebounds.

Perry Ashley scored 15 points and Marshanique Kelly added 10 for Leesburg, while Adrienne Jackson had a game-high 10 rebounds.

The Seahawks have some time off before playing again Jan. 8 at Mariner.

Cape Coral was the only Southwest Florida team to win a division the Queen of Palms Tournament -- the lone area team to win a first-round game.

There are only local teams on the schedule from here on out, but Myers isn't ready to talk about an undefeated season.

"We just want to be 1-0 after every game," Myers said. "We don't want to be looking at a specific record, 12-0 or 13-0. Our goal is to be 1-0 after every game."
