Boys hoops last to make season debut

The last of the high school winter sports to open regular season play is boys' basketball in the coming week.

Mariner, Island Coast and Ida Baker make their season debut on their home courts Monday. Cape Coral High opens on the road at Estero Monday with a new head coach in Tom Kenna. The Seahawks play their first home game at The Nest on Tuesday against East Lee County.

Boys' and girls' soccer began their seasons at the start of November with girls' basketball programs getting under way last week.

Cape Coral and Ida Baker, which also has a new head coach in charge of the program, participate in a Thanksgiving Shootout Friday and Saturday at Island Coast.

Coach Jay Sanderson leads the Bulldogs against C.S. Naples in the second game of the shootout at 11 a.m. Friday and return at 9:30 a.m. Saturday to take on Sunrise Piper..

The Seahawks face Plantation American Heritage at 9 p.m. Friday and close out the event at 9 p.m. Saturday against Barron Collier, one of five Collier County teams participating.

The host Gators play at 7:30 p.m. both nights, taking on Hudson on Friday and Naples on Saturday.

Mariner travels to Jacksonville for the MLK Shootout on Friday and Saturday.

Mariner's girls' also participate in a holiday hoops tourney next weekend as do Island Coast, North Fort Myers and Bishop Verot.
