Raiders seal winless season for Knights

November 3, 2012
By NEIL BLAIR-BENNETT - Special to the Breeze , Cape Coral Daily Breeze

For the first time since 1967, the North Fort Myers Red Knights have endured a winless season.

The final nail in their coffin for 2012 came Friday night in a 42-0 defeat at the hands of Riverdale. The Knights finish 0-10 overall, and dead last in District 6A-11 at 0-6.

A Riverdale (4-5, 2-4 district) running game shredded North's defense for more than 500 rushing yards. Sophomore tailback tandem Van Edwards and Jamal Watkins combined for 321 yards rushing and five touchdowns, senior quarterback Anthony Snyder chipped in with 99 yards and the other Riverdale touchdown.

Following a North punt, the Raiders took over on their own 16-yard line and methodically marched for the first score. Snyder capped the drive with a 38-yard run down the left sideline following outstanding blocking to the end zone. Brian Abrams added the extra point and Riverdale was in front 7-0.

In the second quarter, North again was forced to punt and Connor Black pinned the Raiders at their own 13-yard line. On the first play of the drive, Edwards took the pitch around the left side and easily outraced defenders for an 87-yard touchdown run.

Edwards broke another big play with a 45-yard burst. That play set up Watkins with a powerful run up the middle for a 15-yard score and a 21-0 Raidesr lead.

Riverdale ran back the second-half kickoff for a 90-yard score, but a holding penalty brought the play back. But, on the very next play Edwards broke free again and galloped 83 yards and his second touchdown.

As they had done all night, the Raider defense stymied Brandon Makar an the Knights offense. Following the latest North punt, Snyder and Watkins combined for big runs leading to a 14yard TD for Watkins.

The Raiders pulled most of their starters by the time the fourth quarter rolled around. The results didn't change much as North still couldn't move the ball and couldn't stop the Raiders' ground game.

Sophomore quarterback Jesse Lighthall rounded out the scoring with a one-yard sneak.

Riverdale visits Lehigh next Friday to conclude the regular season.
