The Island Coast Gators, decked out in their trendy camouflage patterned pants, celebrated senior night with a playoff-clinching 31-14 win over the Riverdale Raiders Friday night.
Island coast jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first quarter, with a 63-yard bomb from standout senior quarterback Kurt Benkert to Vincent Green. The aerial onslaught continued with another nicely placed ball by Benkert, who found the somewhat undersized, but powerful J.D. Irons, 25 yards away in the corner of the end zone for a 14-0 lead less than hal way through the first quarter.
The Raiders responded to the 14-point deficit with an airborne touchdown strike of their own. Senior quarterback Anthony Snyder threw a dart into the end zone, which was tipped, but fell into the waiting hands of receiver Kendall Beck. That cut the deficit to 14-7.
The teams played evenly throughout the second quarter, with the only score coming from Gators kicker Kevin Vigne on a school-record 48-yard field goal.
Riverdale came as close as they would all night in the third quarter. Shifty, hard running sophomore tailback Van Edwards scored in a three-yard TD run with 2:58 remaining to put the only points on the board for either team in the third quarter, 17-14.
The fourth quarter brought the Gators' true bite. Gator tailback Devon Calhoun finished off the Raiders, running for two scores, one of which came on a direct snap when Benkert lined up as receiver. Calhoun took the snap and ran 27 yards and the touchdown.
Calhoun's second score of the quarter was a one-yard dive with 2:10 left, putting the final nail in the Raiders' coffin.
