Oasis’ Falvey claims 3rd straight district golf championship

District A-17 Tournament: Gina Falvey of Oasis captured her third straight district championship Monday by shooting an 18-hole round of 76 at Port Charlotte Country Club.

Falvey's title-winning round was seven strokes better than runner-up Julianna Veloz of Lemon Bay (83). Falvey advances to the regional tournament as the lone representative for the Sharks. The top six individuals advance regardless of their school's finish in the team tally.

The top three finishing teams advancing to regional play are team champion Lemon Bay (358), Bishop Verot (373) and LaBelle (450).

In the boys' tournament on the same course Monday, Brandon Meyer of Bishop Verot shot 73 to take the individual title and lead the Vikings to third place as a team. The Vikings, who shot 327 as a team, finished seven strokes behind title-winning Port Charlotte Community Christian (320). Lemon Bay (322) was second.

John Inkster and Tanner Vandermark of Mariner advance individually after shooting rounds of 77 and 85, respectively. J.P. Schleuter of Oasis also earned a trip to regionals with an 87.

Mariner hosts the Region A-6 Tournament Monday at Coral Oaks Golf Course while the girls' regional also is Monday at Lemon Bay Golf Course.

Volleyball

Oasis 3, LaBelle 2: Marion Chlipala smashed 19 kills to lead a comeback victory Monday night as Oasis downed LaBelle 20-25, 14-25, 25-23, 26-24, 15-11.

Chlipala had plenty of help from teammates Larra Bickelhaupt with 14 kills and Natalie Westendorf with three kills and five blocks.

The Sharks (17-6) play Tuesday night at Southwest Florida Christian.
