East Lee and Mariner were ready to kick off their District 5A-11 football game Friday night, but the weather did not cooperate, and the game was postponed until 3 p.m. Saturday.
With the incident at Southwest Florida Christian Academy just days ago, where a middle school football player was struck by lightning, school officials demonstrated heightened awareness of the danger to players and fans alike.
"Safety was our first concern," said East Lee County principal Brian Mangan. "We were aware of the situation this week, but we also know that Southwest Florida is one of the lightning capitals of the world."
The game was called when it was clear that the weather cell encircling the field was not dissipating.
Another contributing factor to the postponement is that East Lee hosts SAT testing Saturday morning. Administrators did not want students playing a game that would not end till close to midnight.
