South FM rises over North FM

September 29, 2012
By PETE SISK - Special to the Breeze , Cape Coral Daily Breeze

The North Fort Myers Red Knights had one of those nights.

A road trip to South Fort Myers led to a 49-0 rout Friday night, dropping the Red Knights to 0-5, 0-2 in District 6A-11.

South improves to 5-0, 2-0.

The Red Knights managed only 51 yards of total offense, crossing the 50-yard line twice - on the game's first possession and its last.

South , meanwhile, ran the ball for 248 yards and six touchdowns. The Wolfpack's final score came on defense.

"We've just got to keep working," North coach Brian Makar said. "I told you it wasn't going to be easy."

The Red Knights had problems before the game started.

The visit of Vice President Joe Biden to Fort Myers snarled traffic in the area. North's buses rolled into the parking lot minutes before the scheduled 7:30 p.m. start.

"Well, no, we got here just when we wanted to," Makar said.

North picked up two first downs on the game's opening drive, but then everything went South's way.

The Wolfpack ground down North with 186 yards rushing, good for five first-half TDs. Robert Brown scored twice with Andrew Dailidonis, D'Ronzijah Matthews and Kelsey Dawson each running for scores.

"We wanted to get better at running the football," South coach Grant Redhead said. "We weren't great at it last year. I mean we weren't bad, but this year we made a commitment to it."

Brown led the Wolfpack rushers with 118 yards on 18 carries.

Meanwhile, South's defense stopped the Knights cold. Quarterback Brandon Makar was sacked four times, Antwan Dixon intercepted a pass, and North managed just 25 yards of total offense for the half.

On South's special teams, Jayron Kearse blocked a North punt with Bryce Lynn returning the ball to the Knights' 9. That set up Matthews' TD.

Lynn had a one-yard scoring run and Jaquadvias Byrd returned an interception 32 yards to complete the scoring. Carlton Kammerlocher was 7-for-7 on extra point kicks.

The Red Knights are home next Friday for homecoming against Dunbar, a non-district contest.

Four of North's five losses have been by 35 points or more.

"We're still trying," Makar said. "That's all we can do."
