LAWRENCE, Kan. - Following Tuesday's final round of play at the season-opening Marilynn Smith Sunflower Invitational at Alvamar Country Club in Lawrence, Kan., the FGCU women's golf team placed 12th on the 13-team leaderboard. Redshirt freshman Kristin Swindell led the Eagles, finishing in a tie for 22nd individually.
The Eagles entered the final day in 13th place with a two-round score of 658, however the final round 320 moved the Green and Blue into 12th place with a total score of 959 (331-327-320).
Tournament host Kansas topped the leaderboard the entire event, and went on to walk away with the tournament title with a score of 906 (303-298-305), 19 strokes better than Arkan-sas State's 927 (315-302-310).
Swindell led the Eagles throughout the two-day tournament. The Bradenton native carded a 77 on the final day to bring her three-round total to 237 (82-78-77) and finish in a five-way tie for 22nd on the 74-player leaderboard.
Sophomore Georgia Price of Fort Myers High finished two strokes back of Swindell, submitting a 239 (79-82-78) to place in a tie for 31st. Concluding her first collegiate tournament, freshman Sara Detlefsen recorded a three-round total of 245 (83-79-83) for share of 49th.
Freshman Rebecca Van Etten rounded out the Eagle scoring. Van Etten finished in 67th place with a total of 259 (89-88-82).
The Green and Blue will return to the course when they head to Daytona Beach, Fla. to take part in the LPGA Xavier Invitational on Oct. 12-14.
