Look for some hot specials with the opening of the new Gulfcoast Seafood Shop in North Fort Myers, near the border of Cape Coral.

The grand opening is scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 30.

"We're having a lobster special for $9 a pound and a 'Clam Bake' special for one to 10 people," said manager Karan Raby. "The clam bake, for one person is $25."

You get six oysters, six clams, mussels, two large blue crabs, a half pound of local shrimp and lobster.

She said the owners are involved in different seafood restaurants and markets in other areas and saw a need for this type of seafood market here. "But locally, this is my baby."

She believes both the lobster special and the clam bake will be popular.

"We can do it (the clam bake) for up to 10 people or more. I would prefer it pre-ordered, that way we can have it packaged up and have it waiting to be picked up." For each extra person, just multiple the $25.

The lobster special formally starts opening weekend around Aug. 30. There is no end date at this time.

"Just when we run out," Raby said.

The shop will be retail and wholesale. Quantity discounts will also be available, and the location will have a fresh fish counter.

"I'm having a local fisherman bring in mullet, sand bream, sheepshead, tilapia. The lobsters are being shipped in from Maine, live," Raby said.

She hopes to get a lot of preorders.

"If you want to preorder in advance, call on a Monday for a Wednesday delivery and pick up, if on Wednesday a Friday pick up."

Everything there will be fresh, not frozen, including in the counter.

"Customers will be able, to say, see a grouper in the display, they can pick out which one they want and we will clean it for them. If they don't see something in the display that they are interested in, they can let me know, and I will have it in two days for them to pick up."

Raby, who know lives in Punta Gorda, is a former North Fort Myers resident and said she enjoys the community.

"I've worked in different markets for the last 10 years. The people here are really, really friendly and they already want to know what will be happening in the store."

The phones are on now, and best calls are Wednesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. starting Thursday. Aug. 30.

Gulfcoast Seafood is at 710 Pondella, about a quarter of a mile east of Orange Grove Boulevard.

"People say it is a convenient location, that they have been looking for a seafood shop locally," Raby said.

The phone number is 731-2722 (731-CRAB).
