Verot overpowers Cypress 47-7

The Bishop Verot Vikings took like they're ready to go after rolling to a 47-7 victory at Cypress Lake in the fall classic game Friday night at Thomas Broomhead Memorial Stadium.

Verot's offense had the game pretty well in hand by halftime, rolling up a 27-0 lead, and the defense added a pair of scores in the second half.

"It was a good start," said Vikings coach Phil Dorn. "I thought they came out to play. We got some big plays that got the momentum going."

Sophomore quarterback Quinn Farrell had first-half touchdown passes to Luke Labreche and DJ Oceant-Kelly. Labreche also caught a TD pass from Johah Owenby and Oceant-Kelly added a 52-yard scoring run.

"I thought we played well. We still need to get better," Oceant-Kelly said. "I'd like to get the plays better. To be perfect."

The Panthers helped Verot's cause with fumbles, high snaps from center and interceptions that either killed drives or led to Vikings scores.

John Oldenborg took advantage of a snap that Cypress quarterback Jabaris Nixon couldn't handle, picking up the loose ball and running 79 yards for a touchdown. Jeffery Richards intercepted a pass in the fourth quarter and scored from 27 yards out.

Even when something good happened for the Panthers, the end result was often bad. Zyon Simmons raced 66 yards to the Verot 12 on the last play of the third quarter. Four plays later the Panthers turned the ball over on downs, followed by freshman Calvin Roberts taking the ball 84 yards for a Vikings touchdown.

Cypress Lake managed to avoid a shutout when backup quarterback Larry Rogers connected on a 54-yard catch and run with Walter Finley in the fourth quarter.

Dorn not only used two quarterbacks, Farrell and Owenby, in the first half he also employed Oceant-Kelly in a wildcat formation.

"We've got some special kids to get the ball to," Dorn said. "DJ has played a little quarterback for us."

New Cypress Lake coach Dale More addressed his team's mistakes: "We get a little momentum and it goes to our heads. We take two steps forward and take one step back. We make a good play and we have a letdown.

"The good thing is that I didn't see physical errors. What I saw were mental mistakes. Those are things we can go back and fix."

After the game, Dorn reminded his team that a win in preseason doesn't guarantee a win in the season opener. Just a year ago the Vikings looked impressive in a game that didn't count, then stumbled when the season began.

For this year's Vikings, the games that count start Friday night at Mariner.
