DAYTONA - The Fort Myers Miracle lost to the Daytona Cubs 8-4 Monday night in the opener of a four-game series.
The Cubs blitzed Miracle starter Cole Nelson, scoring seven runs in the first three innings. Daytona's John Andreoli led off the first inning with a single, stole second and the scored the first run of the game on a fielding error by Fort Myers first baseman Michael Gonzales.
Daytona's Rafael Lopez and Matt Cerda each added RBI singles in the first to take a 3-0 lead.
In the second, the Cubs added another pair with a run-scoring triple by Roni Torreyes followed by a RBI single through the right side by Rubi Silva. Leading 5-0, Daytona got another two runs on three hits with a sacrifice fly by Tim Saunders and another RBI for Torreyes on a single.
Trailing 8-0 going into the ninth, the Miracle finally scratched for some runs. With one out, Josmil Pinto singled through the left side followed by a walk and a base hit by Mike Gonzales.
Anderson Hidalgo then smacked a first-pitch fastball from Cubs reliever Matt Searle into the left-center field gap to score three runs. They pushed across a fourth when a high chopper by Danny Ortiz forced an errant throw from Torreyes and brought in Hidalgo.
Searle recorded the final two outs without further damage to finish the game.
The Miracle return to Jackie Robinson Field for game two at 7:05 p.m. Tuesday.
