Port Sanibel Marina hosts Grouper Grab Aug. 17-18

The 13th Grouper Grab fishing tournament takes place Aug. 17-18 at Port Sanibel Marina.

The Grab has a long history of being one of the top grouper tournaments in the state of Florida and this year is no exception.

Several new sponsors have come on board, providing anglers with the ideal marina location, high end performance shirts and great hotel rates.

Port Sanibel Marina offers a prime location with dock slips provided free of charge to all registered teams.

"Blessings in a Backpack" is the primary beneficiary from the auction and raffle. The program steps up where federal aid stops by feeding local school children on the weekend.

The mandatory captains' meeting starts at 6 p.m. Aug. 17 at The Lighthouse Waterfront Restaurant at the marina. Anglers receive tournament gear, the rules will be read, questions answered and appetizers served.

The Grab offers two divisions this year - the big boat division (30 feet and over) and small boat division (under 30 feet) making the field as fair as possible for all competing.

The original format returns with three grouper and two snapper per team to be weighed individually. The heaviest total weight of those five fish wins.

Fishing begins Saturday morning at 6 a.m. with all teams required to return to the weigh station at Port Sanibel Marina by 6 p.m.

The public is invited to come to the weigh station and check out all the action.

The awards dinner follows the weigh-in. As the official weighmaster weighs each team's catch, the grouper and snapper will be filleted and taken straight to the grill.

While tournament participants enjoy dinner, officials will tally all scores. Tournament winners in both divisions will be announced, checks and trophies are awarded to the top teams along with bragging rights.

The entry fee is $700 per boat, which includes a four-person team. Additional anglers are $100 each.
