Melvin Gerardo, 81, of Cape Coral, passed away March 31, 2012, at Hope Hospice.
He was born June 22, 1930, in Eagarville, Ill., to Frank and Caroline Gerardo, now deceased. He graduated from Benld Township High School, Benld, Ill., in 1948. Proudly serving his country with the U. S. Marine Corps, he was with the First Marine Division in Korea and in the battle at the Chosin Reservoir. He then enrolled at the University of Michigan, graduating in 1956. His career as a forester for the Illinois Division of Forestery culiminated as superintendant of the Union State Tree Nursery, Jonesboro, Ill.
Upon retirement in 1990, he and Camille moved to Cape Coral, where he volunteered and became involved in numerous organizations particularly the Cape Coral Elks Club. He was exhaulted ruler, house committee chairman and scholarship chairman and was named Elk of the Year in 2009. He was also a member of the NRA, AOPA and the Chosin Few Association.
He had many hobbies including hunting, fishing, camping, all sports and flying his airplane.
He was predeceased by his parents and sisters, Alta Bosetti, Francis Leahy, Mary Dickerson and Vera Heida. He will be sadly missed by his loving family. In addition to Camille, his wife of 60 years, other survivors include daughter, Jamie (Don) Portell of Vero Beach, and grandchildren, Courtney of New York City, and Ryan of Washington, D.C.
A memorial service will be held today, April 7. Memorials may be made to Hope Hospice.
