Ruth Siskind, 94, died peacefully Friday, March 23, 2012, at Gulf Coast Village in Cape Coral, surrounded by her family. Born Nov. 16, 1917, in New York City, she married her childhood sweetheart, Al, Sept. 23, 1939. Traveling with him for almost 10 years as he pursued his civil engineer career around the Great Lakes, they settled in Willowick, Ohio, in 1948, raising their four children there. They retired in 1981 to Cape Coral, where they enjoyed sailing and scouts, welcoming all their family and friends to visit them in paradise. Al passed away in December 2000 and Ruth moved into Gulf Coast Village in September 2003.

She volunteered for over 20 years at Roosevelt Elementary in Willowick, Ohio, and was the backbone of its PTA. She then worked for 10 years at the Lakeland Community College print shop. She was also a trustee on the Willoughby-Eastlake Library Board for many years, taught swimming lessons at the West End YMCA and was the typist for the Shoregate United Methodist Church's Sunday bulletins for almost 25 years.

She joined her husband Al in his sailing hobby, racing and cruising for 12 years in their Mirror 16 on Lake Erie and many inland lakes as active members of CABBS.

They retired to Cape Coral and immediately joined the Cape Coral Sailing Club, where Ruth served as secretary and newsletter editor for many years. They sailed their Hunter 25, Dreamboat, racing and cruising on the Caloosahatchee for 9 years. They also sailed on Gopher Baroque, their daughter Carol and Jerry Pim's sailboat for 20 years. They were members of Cape Coral First United Methodist Church, and she also joined Al as an active volunteers in Boy Scouts at the church from the late 1990s through 2000. Ruth and Al spent many Saturdays in the '80s and '90s visiting residents of nursing homes with their dogs in the PAWS program, and Ruth volunteered in kindergarten and first grade at Cape Elementary for 15 years.

She was very active with Gulf Coast Village activities, endearing herself with both residents and staff there for nearly a decade. She spent many hours knitting and crocheting for her family and friends.

She leaves behind her four children and their families, Marty (Marilyn) Siskind of Mentor, Ohio, and North Fort Myers, Carol Pim of Cape Coral, Harry (Claudia) Siskind of Willoughby, Ohio, and Marian Sweetapple of Painesville, Ohio; nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

She was pre-deceased by her husband, Al; daughter-in-law, Nona Siskind; and son-in-law, Jerry Pim.

Ruth's family would like to thank the staff of Gulf Coast Village for the 8 1/2 years she resided there, Hope Hospice for 16 months of care and her personal aide, Denise, for being such a special presence in her life over the last year. We thank all for their compassionate care, and the grace, dignity, and comfort they offered her, especially during her final journey.

There will be a celebration of life in the auditorium at Gulf Coast Village, 1333 Santa Barbara Blvd., Cape Coral, at 1 p.m., today, March 31, with the Rev. Tom Hafer officiating.

Refreshments will follow.

In lieu of flowers, please feel free to donate to Hope Hospice, 2430 Diplomat Parkway, E., Cape Coral, FL 33990, or PAWS, c/o Grace United Methodist Church, 13 S.E. 21st Place, Cape Coral, FL 33990.
