HOMESTEAD (AP) - A 7-year-old boy shielded his younger brother and another boy from a dog that escaped from a nearby business.

Homestead Police spokesman Fernando Morales says the dog ran to the yard where the boys were playing just before 7 p.m. Thursday and began attacking. The older boy pushed his 4-year-old brother and 4-year-old friend under a vehicle to protect them from the dog.

Than the dog began to maul the older boy.

The boy's father heard the screams and hit the dog with a shovel until it ran away.

Police say the older boy was taken to the hospital with severe wounds to his head, shoulders and arms.

Miami-Dade Animal Services took custody of the dog. The names of the dog owner and children were not released.
