ST. AUGUSTINE (AP) - It's been 58 years since Nellie the bottlenose was born at Marineland, and she's still starring in some of the park's shows.
The park celebrated Nellie's birthday Sunday with a short ceremony, during which the dolphin splashed out candles on an ice cake decorated with sushi and small sea life. Later, trainer Rachel Lehnus fed Nellie treats.
Born Feb. 27, 1953, Nellie is more than twice the average age for female Atlantic bottlenose dolphins. Officials say she's 13 years older than Marineland's next oldest resident -- 44-year-old Pebbles.
Nellie is part of Marineland's feeding and petting show. During the 1960s, Nellie was featured in a television commercial for Timex watches.
