Prep Report: North girls suffer first soccer defeat 2-1

The Fort Myers Green Wave managed what 10 other teams could not - they handed the North Fort Myers Red Knights their first defeat 2-1 in girls soccer Thursday night at Moody Field.

The Green Wave broke the scoreless tie in the first half, but Melinda Lukas knotted the score for the Knights. The tie lasted through halftime until the Green Wave took a 2-1 lead with just over 20 minutes remaining in the second half.

The Knights spent the rest of the night trying to put the ball in the net, but to no avail. Keeper Brianna Abatisti had 13 saves for the Knights (9-1-1, 5-0-1 district), who are idle until after the holiday break.

Ida Baker 3, Riverdale 1: Ida Baker got goals by Shannon Pearl, Brittney Herrera and Alexis Vargas in a victory at Riverdale. The game was a makeup from earlier in the week postponed by the cold weather.

Herrera, Brenna Hambsch and Franny Farella had assists while keepers Payton Van Horn and Carole Farella each played a half and had two saves apiece.

The Bulldogs (11-4-1) have three games Saturday in Mariner's Winter Fest tournament.

Gateway Charter 8, Island Coast 0: Gateway Charter struck for six goals in the second half to end a victory at Island Coast early. Kimmie Kania had 17 saves for the Gators (2-10, 2-3 district), who are idle until after the holiday break.

Boys Soccer

Riverdale 2, Ida Baker 1: Riverdale knocked off Ida Baker after taking a 2-0 lead.

Steve Dowling scored the for Bulldogs in the final 15 minutes, assisted by Fabian Guzman and Kyle Morris. Keeper Rush Manterola made 14 saves.

The Bulldogs (5-8-1) are idle until January.

Gateway Charter 9, Island Coast 1: Gateway Charter left Island Coast still looking for its first win of the season after Thursday's district defeat.

Kevin Vigne scored the Gators' lone goal off an assist by Michael Show in the first half. Keeper Matthew Dal Bon made 12 saves.

The Gators (0-11, 0-7 district) are idle until January.

Boys Basketball

Island Coast 61, Gateway Charter 20: Island Coast's three-quarter court trap defense forced Gateway into repeated turnovers resulting in a huge first-quarter advantage en route to a District 3A-12 victory.

Tim Dal Bon hit for a game-high 21 points, Greg Orellana pulled down a team-high 11 rebounds, Kyle Harding handed out five assists and Billy Rees added 10 points to lead the Gators (6-4, 4-2 district), who are in action starting Monday in the Mariner Christmas Tournament.
