Attorney General encourages parents to check recall lists before shopping for the holidays

November 24, 2010
Cape Coral Daily Breeze

Attorney General Bill McCollum has issued a consumer advisory urging parents to check toy recall lists before shopping for their children's holiday presents.

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, many toys have been recalled this year due to safety hazards, most due to toxic levels of lead or lead paint or choking hazards.

"Parents should always do their research and be aware of the recalls made this year before purchasing toys and other gifts for their children," said McCollum in a prepared statement.

The most recent voluntary recall listed on the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission's website affects rocking horses sold by Rocking Horse Depot. The toys were recalled because the reins on the rocking horse

bridle are long enough to pose a strangulation hazard to young children.

Other voluntary recalls include some infant toys manufactured by Fisher-Price, children's jewelry and glasses manufactured by Chuck E. Cheese, and building sets manufactured by Edushape Ltd.

In addition to checking the current recalls, McCollum also encouraged parents to check any toys they may have purchased earlier in the year before recalls were announced. Recalled toys can also occasionally show up at flea markets and resale shops. Parents can visit http://www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/prerel/category/toy.html to view the most recent list of recalled toys.

The attorney general also cautioned consumers who are buying items online to exercise general precautions to protect their personal information.

Consumers should only provide credit card information to sites they trust and should refrain from clicking on links within emails that promise deals or savings in exchange for personal information.
