South Fort Myers had high expectations heading into the 2010 season, but no one predicted this. The Wolfpack beat Mariner 50-7 Friday night to finish off their amazing undefeated season.
Senior Dallas Crawford threw two long touchdown passes, ran for one score and added an interception in his final high school regular-season game.
The tone of the game was decided early as the Wolfpack needed just two plays after a long kick return to go ahead 7-0, on a nine-yard run by William Donalson.
South's next possession had a different style, but ended with the same result. This time Anthony Debonis scored on a seven-yard run putting the Wolfpack up 14-0 at the end of the first quarter
Mariner's offense got off to a bad start in the first quarter and never recovered. Their first two possessions resulted in punts and the third in the interception by Crawford to start the second quarter.
After the turnover, sophomore Robert Brown took over. One of the Wolfpack's many running threats, Brown carried the ball three times on the drive for 71 yards, including a 68-yard run that brought South to the 1-yard line. Brown punched it in to finish what he started for a 21-0 lead.
The Tritons punted on their next possession and South wasted no time capitalizing. Crawford threw his first touchdown pass of the game to wideout Sammy Watkins. This score put the game out of reach for the Tritons mid-way through the second quarter.
Mariner tried to put a drive together, but quarterback J.T. Etnoyer was sacked on a key third down deep in Wolfpack territory. The Tritons tried a field goal, but a bad snap prevented the kick and no points were scored.
Crawford found Watkins again with just under a minute left for 66 yards to put the Pack up 35-0 at halftime.
The clock never stopped in the second half. Mariner punted after its only two possessions of the third quarter.
South added one score with a nine-yard TD run by Crawford, giving them a 42-0 lead at the end of the third.
The Wolfpack reserves scored the last points on a 24-yard run by Jamarius Causey. A bad snap on the extra-point resulted in a unplanned throw by Crawford, who connected with Luke Smith for the two-point conversion and giving the Wolfpack 50 points for the first time this season.
Andrew Torres took over at quarterback for the Tritons for most of the second half and it paid off. Torres broke the shutout by scoring on a nifty 53-yard TD run, making it 50-7.
South Fort Myers (9-0) finished undefeated for the first time in school history, and Crawford cemented his place as one of the state's top players.
Mariner finished 2-8 and even though both wins came in the district, it was a disappointing season. The bright side is that runningback Tyler Pigott is only a junior and will be back next year to try and right some wrongs for the Tritons.
