A trio of seniors provided a steadying influence Thursday night as the Mariner Tritons rolled to a 3-0 victory over Island Coast.
Seniors Abby Willis and Cody Sawyer provided much of the offense with nine kills and nine service aces, respectively, en route to the 25-12, 25-14, 25-22 win.
Another senior, Samantha Greenwell, handed out 12 assists for the Tritons (2-1), who host Estero in their next match on Tuesday.
"We played much better tonight," said Tritons coach Briska Wolfe. "We have improved and we got to play everyone."
Victoria Webb served up eight aces to go with five kills while Heather Getman added eight aces and seven kills.
Heather Sloat paced the Gators with five digs while Amanda DeMuth led in serving and defense.
Still looking for its first win of the season, Island Coast (0-4) visits Dunbar on Tuesday.
Gulf Coast 3, Ida Baker 0: It took Ida Baker a while to get going against Gulf Coast Thursday night, but a late surge by the Bulldogs forced the Sharks to hang on for a 25-9, 25-14, 28-26 victory.
Alexis Ross topped the Bulldogs with four kills while Madison Kobs contributed three kills and six assists and Kali Nordquist handed out four assists.
"They played their hearts out in the third game and didn't get anything to show for it," said Bulldogs coach Rene Van Horn.
The Bulldogs (1-1) host South Fort Myers Tuesday.
South Fort Myers 3, Cape Coral 0: The Cape High Seahawks played their best match of the season so far, but still came up short in a 26-24, 25-19, 25-21 loss at South Fort Myers.
"We played great tonight," said Seahawks coach Lindsey Conley. "We played very well, but some things didn't go our way."
Senior Jennifer Le and junior Alison Harper each contributed five kills while junior Katherine Habuda had four blocks. Sophomore Kristin Maselter handed out seven assists.
The Seahawks (0-3) play Tuesday at Lemon Bay.
Sarasota Christian 3, Oasis 0: After a sluggish start, the Oasis Sharks made it a competitive match in a 25-9, 25-19, 28-26 defeat at Sarasota Christian.
The bright spot for the Sharks was libero Jennifer Mann with eight digs.
Tuesday's match with Cape Coral Christian has been canceled so the Sharks (0-2) don't play again until next Thursday at Community Christian.
Boys Golf
Ida Baker 166, Lehigh 0: Lehigh showed up with just three players, one less than the required number for a team score, to hand Ida Baker its third victory.
The Bulldogs went on to post a round of 166, led by sophomore Anthony Montoya's 2-over-par 38 at Palmetto Pine. All four of Baker's scoring rounds were lower than Lehigh's leader, Brad Muchler with a 56.
The Bulldogs (3-0) face Mariner Tuesday at Coral Oaks.

Mariner 200, Cape Coral 228: Despite some high scores, Mariner claimed a 200-228 victory over city rival Cape Coral at Royal Tee.
Dean Hofer's medalist-winning score of 44 led the Tritons, who also benefited from a 46 turned in by John Inkster.
"We played better today," said Tritons coach James Harris. "It was good to come away with a win."
Anthony Lawrence led the Seahawks with a 48 in their first competitive round of the season. The scheduled season-opening match Tuesday against Cypress Lake and Dunbar was canceled.
Cape (0-1) hosts East Lee County and Mariner (1-1) hosts Ida Baker on Tuesday.

Hannaford's 3-under 33 took medalist honors while teammate Jake Sherwin shot 37 and Garrett Lee added a 40.
R.C. Grayson led Seacrest with a 42.

North's Zack Holton earned medalist honors with a 1-over-par 37 at Magnolia Landing. Ryan Connors had the low score for Riverdale with a 45.
The Red Knights (1-1) host Fort Myers on Tuesday.

Cape Coral 268, Mariner 275: Cape High's first win of the season came at the expense of crosstown rival Mariner by a seven-stroke margin.
Regina Sin shot the day's low round of 44 at Coral Oaks to lead the Seahawks to a 268-275 win. Kelsey Fallisch had the low round for Mariner (0-2) with 56.
The Seahawks (1-0) host East Lee County Tuesday at Royal Tee.
