To the editor:

I attended the dedication of the new statue at Eco Preserve at the Midpoint Bridge on Memorial Day. It was wonderful to see so many of our residents and many from Fort Myers attend this ceremony. So many veterans from so many wars shared their stories while waiting for the ceremony to begin.

It was unfortunate that the traditional Memorial Day ceremony at Coral Ridge Ceremony took place at the same time making it impossible to attend both.

I took the opportunity to walk around and speak with so many friends and headed towards the Iwo Jima Statue. It has been very hard to watch this wonderful statue begin to disappear piece by piece. This is a piece of our American history that will crumble and will be lost to our great city, if we do not step forward and help to restore it.

The Cape Coral Community Foundation and Veterans from all over have already started a fund to bring this statue back to its original form, but the monies needed at this time in our economy, seem to be eluding us.

As Americans from all over this great country, we need to step to the plate with even $1 each to repair this statue before it is too late.

If everyone in Cape Coral were to donate just $1, we could do it.

I am pleading with you to not let this happen. We enjoy freedom and respect freedom, let's move together now and show that the City of Cape Coral Cares.

Donate just $1 to the Cape Coral Community Foundation (or more if you can afford it) to the Cape Coral Community Foundation, c/o Beth Sanger, Executive Director, 4729 Vincennes Blvd. Cape Coral, Fl. 33904.

Remember it took we the people and the veterans in our community to bring the VA Clinic to Cape Coral, but it took 10 years to do it. Let's not wait until it is too late. God Bless America and her people.
