Body found on Fort Myers Beach identified as that of missing shrimper

Officials have positively identified the body discovered washed ashore on Ft. Myers Beach early Tuesday as that of a shrimper reported missing Monday after he tried to swim ashore from a boat stuck on a sand bar.

The body, identified Tuesday night as Michael Hayes, 42, of 800 San Carlos Drive, was found in the Lynn Hall Park area of Ft. Myers Beach at approximately 6 a.m. by a county worker.

Hayes had been reported missing Monday night after he called and told his girlfriend that his fishing vessel was stuck off Bowditch Point and that he was going to swim to shore.

After driving to Bowditch Point and seeing no sign of Hayes, the girlfriend drove to the U.S. Coast Guard Station on San Carlos Drive and reported the call.

The U.S. Coast Guard, Lee County Sheriff's Office and Ft Myers Beach Fire District participated in a ground and air search for Hayes but were unable to locate him in the darkness Monday.

The Medical Examiner will determine the cause of death, officials said.
