Letters To The Editor

Park needs better care

POSTED: December 25, 2009

To the editor:

I believe that the city of Cape Coral should clean up one of the baseball fields here in the Cape. That field is the Pelican baseball complex off of Pelican Boulevard. I believe it is a disgrace compared to other fields in the area and in the state of Florida. My family no longer goes to this field because we think the city is spending money on all the wrong things.

I feel that the city hasn't been taking the best care of this field. The bathrooms are disgusting and dirty, they only tidy up the fields once in a blue moon, and they don't spend the money to fix up the fields.

Once there was a piece of wood in the doorway of a dugout that broke and could have fallen on someone's head at any time. They did not fix it all season. They fixed it when they heard that there was a reporter coming to the field for an event they were holding. That was the only reason they fixed it.

That could have been extremely dangerous for the players and coaches in that dugout. There are other fields that I have been to that are absolutely amazing and make Pelican look like a dump.

I simply think that the city should take better care of Pelican baseball complex. They should not be spending money on equipment that we don't need and start spending the cash on fixing the fields and making it better for the families that go to Pelican to watch baseball. The field is a fun place to be safe and play baseball.

Why don't you organize a group to do a clean up...since you use the facility why not participate in caring for it!

The condition of the fields is another reason user fees are proper. I would imagine that other fields are maintained, not only by the city, but also by the organizations that use them. If you aren't happy with the bathrooms, why not get a bunch of people that use them to clean them. I know everyone says a user fee is wrong. What about the boat ramp fees? Are they not a user fee?
