Gas leak in Fort Myers stopped

POSTED: November 11, 2009

Today, Nov. 11, at approximately 8:08 a.m., the dity of Fort Myers Fire Department received a call in reference to a gas leak at the AmeriGas facility located in the area of Evans Avenue and South Street. Firefighters responded and were on scene within minutes.

A large amount of gas had leaked so the decision was made to block traffic and shut down the surrounding area as a safety precaution. Since the facility is located in an industrial area, residential evacuation wasn't necessary. The Fort Myers Police Department was on scene to assist.

The city of Fort Myers Fire Department Hazmat team was deployed to monitor the situation and AmeriGas technicians worked to stop the leak. At approximately 8:40 a.m. the leak was stopped with a total loss of 360 gallons.

At this time the area is reopened and clean-up has started.
