Firecats smoke the Sharks

May 2, 2009
By RYAN RYLES, Special to the Breeze

The Firecats returned to Germain Arena Friday night in search of a win to get their record back to .500. They got just what they needed, beating the Corpus Christi Sharks 66-48 on the strength of a nine-touchdown performance by quarterback Chris Wallace.

"That's what we work on everyday," said Wallace who refused to take all the credit. "We work everyday to go out there and execute, not turn the ball over and to try and score on every play and sometimes you get lucky and that seems to happen I'm just happy with the win."

Wallace's 363 passing yards and nine TDs are personal and team bests in both categories.

Corpus Christi scored first on the fourth play from scrimmage on a 25-yard touchdown strike. After missing the extra-point attempt, it was the only lead the Sharks (1-4) would have. The Firecats kicked it into high gear from their first possession.

Using a combination of short passes and timely running, the Firecats burned off nearly five minutes on their first possession, culminating in a five-yard TD run by James Bear.

Wallace's favorite target of the night was Chris McKinney, who caught five touchdown passes for a total of 184 yards.

"People who work hard in practice, it reflects on the field," said Wallace. "He made some big plays for me out there (Friday night)."

Defensively, the Firecats (3-3) turned in one of their better performances, forcing two fumbles, netting four sacks en route to stopping the Sharks on four of their of possessions, which the Firecats turned into touchdowns.

"Offensively we played well," said Firecats coach Kevin Bouis. "And defensively, we came up with some plays It was a big win, we play in a tough division across the board and our schedule outside of the division is tough too, so this was a big win."

The Firecats go back on the road at the Arkansas Twister next Saturday night.
