Spirit of giving undampened

December 20, 2008
Cape Coral Daily Breeze

Santa's sleigh is likely to be a lot lighter for many of us this year.

While we all hoped 2008 would bring better economic times, the year passed by with even lower home values, more foreclosures and rising unemployment.

Still, despite the leaner wallets, the spirit of giving remains strong as Cape residents continue to donate to food drives, toy drives and drop cash into kettles and coin boxes.

We thank these donors who, with little extra to spare, are helping to make the holidays a little brighter for those in need.

And we ask those who can to dig a little deeper.

Donations are down this year and need is up. The Salvation Army alone estimates a 70 percent increase in the number of families seeking basic assistance.

Meanwhile, we still can find holiday cheer in getting getting back to the basics of the season.

Time with family. Gifts from the heart. Traditional fare.

In good times and in bad, in bountiful years and in times of need, we find ways to celebrate the true spirit of a season that embodies sacrifice, hope, and, yes, miracles, all gifts bestowed that very first Christmas 2000-plus years ago.

We wish you all happy holidays and a very Merry Christmas.

Once again, may the new year bring hope and recovery. And may we all work to make it so.
