Felons who cross county lines for crimes targeted

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — A South Florida sheriff says his county is besieged by bandits who travel from county to county, preying on residents who live near interstate highways.

To help him out, a bill that would tack on a third-degree felony charge on top of any other crimes passed through the Senate Committee on Criminal Justice Monday with a 5-1 vote.

The measure (SB 550) would add the charge on anyone who crosses a county border to commit a felony.

Martin County Sheriff William Snyder calls them "pillowcase burglars," and he says they have moved though Martin, Broward and St. Lucie counties, stashing their takes in pillowcases.
