Teen accused of killing mom ruled incompetent

MILTON, Fla. (AP) — A judge has ruled that a Panhandle teen accused in the Christmas Eve stabbing and bludgeoning death of his mother is incompetent to stand trial.

Circuit Judge John Simon ruled Wednesday on 17-year-old William Brandon Aydelott's mental stability. The teen faces an adult charge of first-degree murder.

The Pensacola News Journal (http://goo.gl/Sj8Dl0 ) reports that Aydelott's criminal proceedings will be delayed but not halted. Aydelott will spend six months at Florida State Hospital. A trial date has been set for July 14.

The Santa Rosa County Sheriff's Office says Aydelott confessed to attacking his mother with kitchen knives and a baseball bat after the two had an argument. Sharon Aydelott, a longtime middle school science teacher, died at the scene. The sheriff's office said the teen was found hours later at a nearby home, where he surrendered.
