MIAMI (AP) — Three Miami-Dade Police officers were shot and two suspects were killed in a series of shootings early Tuesday, authorities said.
One officer was shot just after 5 a.m. in northwestern Miami-Dade County after responding to a call about shots fired, Maj. Nancy Perez said.
It was not immediately clear what led to the officer being shot in the abdomen.
"He's in good shape and he's going to recover," said Police Director J.D. Patterson.
The officer's patrol car was stolen and abandoned in Hialeah, Perez said. Two suspects then acquired another vehicle and fired at officers pursuing them, striking two in the arm.
None of the officers' injuries were life-threatening, and all underwent surgery at a Miami hospital, Perez said. A fourth officer from the Hialeah Police Department was injured by broken glass.
The suspects were shot and killed by police. It wasn't known whether both had been at the scene of the first officer's shooting, or if one joined the other after the patrol car was abandoned, Perez said.
Police continued their investigation at several locations in northwestern Miami-Dade County. Television news reports showed police blocking off a blue Volvo convertible driven by the suspects, which had been run into a tree.
