Kennedy's Fla. trip remembered for hope, innocence

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Days before he was assassinated, President John F. Kennedy had just wrapped up a trip to Florida.

He visited Cape Canaveral, Miami and made four stops along a 26-mile long route in Tampa. For Tampa, it was the first time a sitting president had ever visited and left people full of hope and joy.

Thousands of people gathered along the streets just to get a glimpse of Kennedy driving through in his black convertible limousine, the same one he was assassinated in four days later in Dallas, shattering the country.

Kennedy's trip to Tampa is the subject of a new documentary by a local filmmaker, and a ceremony to commemorate the 50th anniversary of his visit to Tampa will be held Monday in the city.
