Key penalty, weak offense led to Patriots' loss

October 21, 2013
Associated Press

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — Bill Belichick is taking the blame for a penalty that led to the overtime field goal that beat New England.

The Patriots coach says he was wrong in his interpretation of a rule against a player shoving a teammate into the offensive formation on kicking plays. Defensive tackle Chris Jones did that and was penalized on the play in which Nick Folk missed a 56-yard field goal attempt.

Folk then connected on a 42-yarder to give the New York Jets a 30-27 win on Sunday.

Jones took the blame after the game, but Belichick said Monday it wasn't the player's fault. He said it was his own fault and that of the coaching staff because it's their job to understand the rules.
