Crash injures 2 northwest of Kotzebue

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — An Alaska man and a Florida man were airlifted to Anchorage following the crash of a small airplane northwest of Kotzebue. (KAHTZ-eh-bew).

Alaska State Troopers say 68-year-old Cecil Taylor of Soldotna and 61-year-old Dan Beard of Florida crashed Friday on a hillside 24 miles northwest of Kotzebue.

Troopers say no one heard their mayday call until 1 p.m. Saturday.

Alaska National Guard Lt. Bernie Kale tells the Anchorage Daily News ( that Alaska Air National Guard helicopter responded from Nome. The crew picked up medical personnel from Kotzebue and flew to the crash site.

Kale says good Samaritans were on the ground dismantling the airplane to pull Taylor and Beard from the wreckage.

Beard's hometown in Florida was not immediately available.
