Civility first

April 8, 2016

As a business, we are Cape Coral taxpayers by choice. When we built our new printing plant several years ago, Coral Coral was a first-choice location....

Yes, this an excellent article and message. There is always going to be differences of opinion. We are all entitled to our opinions and to voice our opinions in a respectful manner when the true facts become apparent.

Good editorial,Yes many of these debates have become to personal attacks and drift away from the topics. It should be closely monitored and when subject matter goes astray, shut the comment maker off. Also, on the subject of issues that the powers in charge of the cities welfare making deals out of the public's ears needs to be stopped. I would hope the Cape Coral Breeze push for more investigating reporting. Something stinks with the latest issue of late night bar openings, and I think it will raise its head shortly, and the issue of L.C.E.C. that also needs investigating closely.

Excellent Editorial. Perhaps, some day soon, all will follow your lead. However, it will be a slow journey. The trend today is to attack anyone with any information that differs with others. Too bad it happens, but we can only hope it will change, and soon.

TWT - Your "oh so inconsiderate" comments are exactly what The Breeze Editorial is suggesting to refrain from.

I strongly agree that comments and criticism should be focused on the issue and not the person. The problem is that many times when someone raises concerns or is critical of some situation, decision, or a position taken by someone, that someone cries "PERSONAL ATTACK" to deflect and avoid addressing legitimate and reasonable concerns and criticisms. It happens all the time in politics.

Val, Good Editorial! Hope it make a serious impression on some of the posters to stick to the issue and stop attacking people!

We are aware of the issue as related to the comments element of our website, which is intended to self-police. Readers who believe comments violate the user agreement by targeting other posters or persons instead of the issues raised in the story or letter are invited to click the "abuse" button. We also are sometimes asked why some issue-related comments are removed. It is typically because the poster also included, for example, name calling or a related "opinion" as to the alleged motivation or mental status of other posters or persons named in the post. This is sometimes unfortunate as the comments, even if critical, would not otherwise constitute abuse. We continue to urge posters to "attack" the issue, not the person. The former fosters debate, the latter tends to quash it.

Absolutely agree with this editorial. A good place to start would be cleaning up this blog. It is a perfect example of what you are commenting about. This blog has denigrated to useless comments and name calling. It is not a forum where people can have a serious debate.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, I've had this discussion on local FB pages over and over. Yes, it is a minority of closed minded individuals or gangs, like high school clicks. It seems in such a beautiful city we would not find such self loathing energy that is toxic to your and our listeners. I've wanted to state this for weeks, but when I post, it's mostly more bullying. It would benefit us all to have positive Op-Ed pieces, and if you ever need a one, just contact me. Thanks
