June 5, 2014

To the editor: We wrote the following letter to the mayor of Cape Coral voicing our opinion regarding the handling of the Yacht Club — commercial venture of the Boathouse and the parking situation:......

The council made a bad decision on a fairly minor issue which is not a big deal. The public pointed out the error and they changed things. Good job! I wish the council would be this responsive on some other much more important issues.

I don't think the parking situation is news to the powers that be, they've stated that it's a work in progress so why not give them a chance to work things out before everyone gets their panties in a bunch?

As for JJSullys comment about there being no need for valet parking when it was KC's Riverstop, there was a really good reason for that.....had you ever eaten there?

I think there may be some misunderstanding on the part of the letter writer. This wasn't a new decision to add a commercial venture; there was KC Riverstop in the past. The contract was awarded to this new restaurant under the previous mayor's council. It is not city employees doing the parking as stated in the letter; it is employees of the restaurant. Finally, it isn't going to cost the taxpayers anything to park as long as they don't park in the valet section. All other spots continue to be free.

About the city manager,it is time for us to review this city manager's performance and his administration for some of the things they have proposed. Taxes and more taxes seems to be the only thing he can do. Anyone can manage with unlimited funds, that does not take any management ability. We need to elect council members who are ready to remove this city manager and go with a person who can actually manage with the funds available. Who can make difficult decisions. Hopefully, the next election will give us an opportunity to remove him from his position, then we can move forward.

Another good decision by our city manager and his staff. Maybe he can blame the "governing body" that oked the boat house for the spot. I do not remember in that discussion any parking issues or valet parking. Nor was it brought back up for council review. This is the city manager we are stuck with for now. I would not suggest he make any long term plans. Also, why did we not need valet parking before ?

The complainers will always complain and this city has more than its fair share of complainers. Yet, our infamous repeat complainers fail to offer useful suggestions for improving the situation…they just like to complain. The parking situation isn’t going to change. Even when the valet parking is eliminated there will still be a parking problem. Why? Because there has always been a shortage of prime parking space available in the immediate area. We quickly forget there was an occasional parking problem even before the Boathouse. The Boathouse has made the Yacht Club a destination and once the snowbirds arrive the word will get out and the problem will only become worse. It’s time for council to seriously address this problem and not just hope it goes away.

I am in total agreement. Every Cape Coral taxpayer needs to be issued a parking sticker to be used in our parks. If you have one, you park for free, if you don't, you don't park. This issue was recognized by everyone from the start, and the solution was an underhanded move on the part of the city and the owners of the restaurant. Let them shuttle help from their Fords Garage location.
