I've never been a fan of required testing nor do I think we should have to press "1" for English. However, there are other sides to the story as well. My dad grew up in a German speaking home. The minute he started school, many years ago, he was told, "No more German. We speak English in school" even though the teacher was also a German speaker. Dad said it was hard for the first couple weeks, especially since recess was conducted in German and he still spoke German at home. But, he learned and to this day, when he and his siblings gather, they sometimes lapse into German! The sad thing? Not a single one of the next generation speak German. In one generation, we lost that familial skill. Kind of sad that we can't find a happy middle somewhere.

A first; Mary West wrote a LTE that is nearly sensible and intelligible. Maybe there is hope for 2014.
