Cape Coral property taxes

November 7, 2013

To the editor: Today I was looking at my property taxes on line and was surprised, confused, and disappointed. Last year my taxes were $3704.42 and the proposed taxes for this year is $4060.14....

The value of your home IS going up. All values of homes are going up. See where it says "Property Valuation?" $225,499.00 last year compared to $254,095.00 this year. An increase of $28,596.00. But what about 2010 when the house was valued at $240,000.00 and it decreased in value $15,000.00 to 225,000.00 by 2012? Values go up and they go down and with that so do real estate taxes. But you knew that already, didn't you?

Mary, 7 of the 8 increases were county taxes, not city. You don't sound sure about the market value of your home so you need to look at the trim notice again. As we move forward with the PST and the Fire Assessment you will see lower adjustments to the millage in the future because these fees will offset any needs that would have been addressed by the millage in the past. A more stable revenue stream will solidify our future budgets.

Actual figures from 2012 on my TRIM notices: Cape Coral: 20.9077 Ft. Myers: 15.7259 Cape Coral property taxes are higher, and the return on those taxes are lower. My roads (Ft. Myers) are in great shape (no special fee to pay for repaving), my police/sheriff service is fantastic, and the Fire/EMS arrives when needed (no extra fees necessary). The problem with Cape Coral isn't ideology, it mathematics.

@leadorfollow: What you say may be true, but only because Ft. Meyers has a larger Commercial/Industrial base contributing to your overall tax base. It is what the Cape has been struggling with since it's beginning. However, how is your CRIME rate? Ft. Meyers is now known as the Murder Capitol of SW Florida. I wouldn't live in Ft. Meyers for FREE! Still going out after dark, are you?

1Sandy: I go out all the time after dark. Maybe not down in Dunbar looking to score some crack, but I'm always outside in the evening. In Ft. Myers we actually have outdoor activities to participate in. Shopping destinations, dining, cultural etc… That's the reason I moved from Cape Coral. A whole lot of nothing to offer except excuses and blame. I just like that you all are admitting that Cape Coral is a bedroom community and always will be. Like I said, Cape Coral has a mathematics problem.

@leadorfollow: You say, always will be a bedroom community? Not always, but change takes time. How's your traffic? Waiting in lne at restaurants long? Naw, Cape is the place to live. How is your canal living going?...oh, that's right, you now live in a gated community, no canal. How is that working out? Don't you miss seeing your RAG buddies back here fighting and scheming in a losing cause? Let's face it, had not the RAGs put King in as CM, who knows, ALL the RAGs still might be on the Council. Sullivan tried to warn you guys, but the rest of the RAGs wouldn't listen. Gotta love it, eh? Bwahahaha!

leador follow....Here is some math for you. Cape Coral-1Roadie= better A lot of the problem here is armchair councilmembers who think they know what it is to sit on the other side. One facet of a diamond does not make the shine. Does not take overtime to figure that one out.

Here is some math for you national news MSNBC states Cape Coral's claim to fame is GOVERNMENT. Without it there is NOTHING here. Nineteen other communities the Cape was rated with had a LARGE company in High Tech manufacturing (hardware/Software, biotechnology research, telecommunications). These are called ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT GENERATORS. Where are they in Cape Coral? Three legged stool my A**! The large company produces jobs, produces needs for other services from other businesses. Big city Cape Coral, Florida. What a joke! But we will watch and wait and see the trained seals perform!
