Condo Board Members Must Demonstrate Knowledge
September 14, 2010 - Sylvia Heldreth
As of July 1,2010, the board members who serve in Florida's community associations must demonstrate within 90 days of their election that they are knowledgeable about relevant Florida statutes and certain issues of association management. This knowledge can be demonstrated by signing an affidavit or taking courses. Confirming that a new board member has the necessary knowledge to perform his or her duties is a good thing.
On the other hand, it has always been difficult to find individuals who are willing to serve on a board. Now we are asking them to sign an affidavit or take a course and, most likely, pay for the education. This additional requirement can't be a good thing.
