Sprinkler Retrofit Law
April 2, 2010 - Sylvia Heldreth
A law signed by the governor in May 1998 that went into effect on January 1, 2001 requires that multifamilty dwellings such as condominiums and other high-rises with fire sprinkler systems be retrofit. The cost to "retrofit" depends on many factors. The cost of retrofitting a condominium with fire sprinklers could range from $4 to $8 per square foot. This means that a 1,500 sq. ft. condominium would cost between $6,000 and $12,000.
Senate Bill 714 which would have allowed for an extension of the deadline from 2014 to 2025 was vetoed by Governor Christ in 2009 because he believed the delay would present an uanacceptable safety risk to Florida's elderly condominium residents.
